Egg Harbor City - Atlantic County Economic Alliance

Egg Harbor City

Egg Harbor City is “The Place to Be, We’ve Got It All.”

Incorporated in 1858, Egg Harbor City was settled by German Americans who incorporated the “Gloucester Farm and Town Association,” consisting of nearly 40,000 acres.  Egg Harbor City is in the center of Atlantic County, bordering Galloway Township and Mullica Township in Atlantic County; and Washington Township in Burlington County.

Egg Harbor City’s bustling downtown area has restaurants, pubs, retail, and professional and medical offices. Other retail, restaurants, shopping, and commercial locations are conveniently located along the White Horse Pike corridor.

Philadelphia is less than one hour away via the Atlantic City Expressway or White Horse Pike. The Atlantic City International Airport is just a 20-minute drive, and the Hamilton Mall and Consumer Square shopping centers are just 15 minutes away. The Jersey Shore beaches are only 30 minutes away.

The Egg Harbor City train station is walkable from downtown, and the station connects to NJ Transit trains and buses and the PATCO Speedline in Lindenwold, Philadelphia, and Amtrak’s 30th Street Station. NJ Transit also connects to the Atlantic City International Airport, the FAA Technical Center, and Stockton University.

Just past the downtown of Egg Harbor City are wide open spaces, farmland, and many parks and recreational areas, such as Bear Creek Preserve and Egg Harbor Lake. Egg Harbor City is on the Mullica River, which is a 50-mile-long river that flows to the Atlantic Ocean. It flows along Egg Harbor’s eastern border with Burlington County, past Clarks Landing, which is just across from Green Bank, Lower Bank, and Wading River. There are several marinas along the Mullica. Other popular spots for boaters and eco-tourists are Gloucester Furnace and Gloucester Lake.

All of Egg Harbor City is included in the New Jersey-designated Pineland Area and within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a protected natural area of unique ecology covering more than one million acres and was the nation’s first National Reserve.

Two major institutions are nearby, just 10 minutes from Egg Harbor City: AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center is regionally recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals in several specialties. And one of New Jersey’s best colleges, Stockton University, has its main campus in nearby Galloway. Stockton is ranked among the nation’s top public universities with more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs.

Egg Harbor City Facts

Most residences in Egg Harbor City can be found in the smaller residential lots downtown, while the remainder of the land is in 20-acre farm parcels. This was done by design by the German business leaders who settled the area and laid out a park in the center of town, as well as areas for recreation that are still in use today. And many streets still bear the name of famous German cities and people.

Egg Harbor City was divided and plotted from the railroad north to the Mullica River, west ending at Hanover Avenue, and the easternmost land being the home of the present-day Stockton University. North-South streets were named for German cities and the East-West streets were named for notable Germans.

The Camden Railroad opened in 1854 with a stop in Egg Harbor City on the way to Atlantic City. The founders envisioned a place close to Philadelphia where German culture would thrive. Though the city did not grow to the size as planned, it did become an established place for German language and culture through the end of the 19th century.

The original inhabitants of the region were the Lenni-Lenape tribe. The Lenape’s historical territory consisted of most of New Jersey, including what is now Egg Harbor City. Egg Harbor City then settled by Europeans in the early 1600’s, when the Dutch sailed up the Mullica River, and named the area for the abundance of birds: “Eyren Haven” or Harbor of the Eggs.
