About Hamilton Township

Hamilton’s modern history starts in Mays Landing. European settlers arrived in the early 1700’s. In 1740, George May arrived, and would build a shipyard and trading post on the Great Egg Harbor River in 1756. The area would be named Mays Landing, and it became a bustling town by the early 1800’s. Local resident George Wheaton built sailing ships here with local lumber.

The original inhabitants of Hamilton Township were the Lenni-Lenape tribe. The Lenape’s historical territory covered much of New Jersey, including what is now present day Hamilton Township. Several places in the Township are Lenape origin, such as Lake Lenape.

Hamilton would be incorporated as a township in 1813, formed from sections of Egg Harbor Township and Weymouth Township; and sections of Hamilton Township would later form the Town of Hammonton and Buena Vista Township.

Mays Landing was designated the county seat in the mid-1800’s, and the courthouse, jail and government offices were built, which would make Mays Landing the center for county business, which it still is today. The Atlantic County Justice Facility, the County Court buildings and the main branch of the County Library are all presently located in Mays Landing.
