Linwood Facts

Linwood was originally incorporated as a borough in 1889, from portions of Egg Harbor Township, and then reincorporated as a city in 1931. Originally named Leedsville, the area was settled by Quakers in the mid 1700’s, along the present-day Shore Road. The Quaker meeting house stood only until the late 1860’s, but the cemetery still remains.

A rail line from Philadelphia to Atlantic City in the mid 1800’s led to local expansion, and in 1880 , the Pleasantville-Ocean City Railroad opened along Shore Road. The rail line was replaced by a trolley in the early 1903.

The City’s largest employers are Linwood Country Club, Brandywine Senior Living, and Complete Care at Linwood.

Linwood Country Club first opened in 1921. The club would close for several years and then reopen following World War II. In 2017, Linwood Country Club was purchased by a small group which includes the local Dougherty family who also own Dock’s Oyster House and the Knife & Fork Inn in Atlantic City. Since assuming ownership, the club has become a top regional golf destination. There have been many renovations, as well as enhanced food and beverage options which have expanded the Club’s reputation as a premier venue for weddings and other events.
