Longport

Borough of Longport

With very few businesses, the Borough of Longport is a unique residential community located on the southern end of Absecon Island, with just one-half square mile of land area. It borders the bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Longport is almost exclusively residential, and there are less than ten businesses here. It is primarily a second-home community, with large homes on quiet streets, oceanfront estates, and condominium communities.

Regionally, as part of the vibrant Atlantic City Area, Longport is just minutes from world-famous beaches, boardwalks, and casinos, as well as the Atlantic City International Airport. Nearby Atlantic City, Margate, and Ventnor offer shopping, restaurants, and lodging, as Longport has no hotels and few seasonal rentals.

About Longport

The first private landowner was Thomas Budd in 1695. Many years later, in 1854, Samuel Overshine purchased a parcel of land containing dunes that built up at the southwestern end of the island. The property would change hands and size, as accumulating sand from Atlantic City would add nearly a mile to the southern end of the island. However, storms in the early part of the 20th century would wash away the area that made up the ten numbered streets, which is why Longport today starts at 11th Avenue.

Longport would develop with residential and commercial establishments during the 20th century. There was a Summer Seashore Home for Handicapped Children built in the early 1900s. Other local institutions included Gospel Hall, the Longport Inn, the United States Coast Guard Building, Winchell School, and the Betty Bachrach Home for Afflicted Children. Many of these buildings would be demolished to make way for residential properties or converted for use by the Borough. Today, Longport is almost entirely residential. The Borough of Longport has a vast history and many stories to offer. For more information, visit the Longport Historical Society and Museum next to Borough Hall at 2301 Atlantic Avenue in Longport.

Longport residents like their uncrowded beaches, where there is plenty to do at the beach. Longport has several surfing beaches as well as designated kayak beaches. For the most current information on beach designations, visit here.

Margate may have Lucy the Elephant, but Longport is famous for its Smiley Face Water Tower, a blue smiley face painted on the Borough’s water tower, which is the unofficial friendly mascot of this town.

Fishing and boating are popular activities here. Seaview Harbor Marina is just over the Longport Bridge in Egg Harbor Township. The marina sits on the Great Egg Harbor Inlet and has more than 300 deep water slips. The marina can accommodate boats up to 125 feet in length.

The popular Longport Dog Beach is just minutes from Longport, on Ocean Drive (Route 152). The beach is also known as Malibu Beach or Dog Beach. The beach is located at Malibu Beach Wildlife Management area in Egg Harbor Township and is an off-leash dog beach for dogs to play along the water. The Management Area is state-owned and operated.

Adjacent to Dog Beach is the Longport Fishing Pier, and other popular fishing spots are along the jetty wall.

For nightlife, there is the excitement of Atlantic City restaurants and gaming. Closer are the restaurants and taverns in nearby Ventnor, Margate, and Somers Point, all within ten minutes.

Commercial and Residential Information

Longport is almost entirely residential. There are very few businesses, and just two restaurants. Most homes in Longport are second homes. There are several real estate offices in Longport, Margate, and Ventnor with Longport listings for sale.
