About Pleasantville

Pleasantville was originally a part of Egg Harbor Township and became a borough in 1888. The town began along Old Shore Road, which was originally a stagecoach route running from Port Republic to present-day Somers Point. The town grew with the addition of trolley service in 1903, with most of the development in the Main Street area.

Pleasantville’s eclectic food scene has something for everyone. You can get local seafood, Mexican, Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Italian, Vietnamese, and more. There is even the traditional New Jersey Diner. And for food shopping and takeout, there are several groceries and bodegas, as well as a large Latin Grocery and Asian Supermarket.

Pleasantville is known for being the place to buy a car at the Jersey Shore. There are more than a dozen new and used car dealerships located along the Black Horse Pike, where many of the dealerships have been in the same location for decades. Prospective buyers will find luxury new cars, affordable used cars, and everything in between.

Pleasantville is one of the most walkable towns in Atlantic County. Shopping, restaurants, medical offices, and public transit are all downtown. Walk Score gives Pleasantville a 78 out of 100 and high marks for Very Walkable, stating: “Most errands can be accomplished on foot; nearby public transportation options, and biking is convenient for most trips.”

The Pleasantville to Somers Point bicycle and walking path runs over eight miles, connecting Pleasantville to the cities of Northfield, Linwood, and Somers Point. The path travels through the city centers, neighborhoods, and parks. It begins in Pleasantville and ends in Somers Point where it connects to the Route 52 Bridge Trail, and then into Ocean City. The north end of the trail begins in in Pleasantville, near the intersection of New Road and Decatur Ave. The path runs over an inactive railroad bridge to cross over the Black Horse Pike. It continues then into Northfield.

More information on the bike trail is available here.

Development

Pleasantville has embarked on a new phase of development. A new public transit station has been built, as well as parks and other recreational facilities. The City has also received significant federal and state funding toward other projects, including road and utility infrastructure; streetscapes and bike paths.

The long-awaited Marina and Lakes Bay development has begun. Immediate plans for the area include 180 rental units, with a pool, clubhouse, and gym.

Future plans are to add restaurants in the area. Another key facet of the plan is the construction of the new Pleasantville Waterfront Park. The park is funded by a $1.2 million Green Acres grant. Additional funds for this project come from the Urban Enterprise Zone program and the city, officials said. Other improvements are being made in the Marina area and the Pleasantville Yacht Club.

Many businesses are moving to Pleasantville to take advantage of the many incentives to locate their business here.
