Port Republic - Atlantic County Economic Alliance

Port Republic

Incorporated in 1905, the City of Port Republic sits along the Mullica River and Nacote Creek in northern Atlantic County. Locals call it “The Port,” and residents love the quiet and secluded life along the water. Port Republic is one of the smallest municipalities in size and population in Atlantic County, with approximately one thousand residents and just over eight square miles in size. The town is small and charming, and the local businesses reflect the character of the town; marinas, campgrounds, and small retail shops.

Port Republic cherishes its rich history. The area’s river location made it a strategic harbor during the Revolutionary War, and several battles were fought in and around Port Republic. There are several historic sites to visit. More information can be found here.

Port Republic is secluded, but Atlantic City gaming, restaurants, and nightlife are just a 25-minute ride. Philadelphia is less than one hour away, via the Atlantic City Expressway or White Horse Pike. The Atlantic City International Airport is just a 20-minute drive, and the Hamilton Mall and Consumer Square shopping centers are just 15 minutes away. The New York Metropolitan airports can be reached via the Garden State Parkway.

Port Republic is primarily residential, single-family homes that are nestled on spacious, wooded lots in the historic district or along the water.

Port Republic Facts

The original inhabitants of the area were the Lenni-Lenape tribe, whose historical territory consisted of most of New Jersey, including what is now Port Republic. There are several places named after the Lenape origin, including Nacote Creek. European settlers arrived in the 16th century, and would permanently settle in the region in the 1700’s.

Port Republic was incorporated from portions of Galloway Township. The city’s name derives from the US Republic. Port Republic is located on the Mullica River, bordering Galloway Township in Atlantic County, Bass River Township, and Washington Township in Burlington County. It is included in the New Jersey-designated Pineland Area and within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a protected natural area of unique ecology covering more than one million acres and was the nation’s first National Reserve.

For boating, kayaking, and canoeing, there are marinas along Nacote Creek and on the Mullica River near Port Republic. Boaters can travel up the Mullica River towards Sweetwater, or out to Great Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

There are several nature reserves in and around Port Republic. The preserves are an excellent spot for nature watching and photography. These areas include the Nacote Creek Preserve, the Port Republic Wildlife Management Area, and the Keep Conservation Foundation’s Port Republic Preserve. These areas consist of woods, fields, ponds, and salt marshes. The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is just five miles away in nearby Galloway Township.
