Weymouth Township - Atlantic County Economic Alliance

Weymouth Township

Located along the South River and the Great Egg Harbor River is the peaceful and wooded Weymouth Township. Originally incorporated in 1798, it is one of the oldest towns in Atlantic County. Weymouth Township is known for its scenic beauty and small-town charm. Much of Weymouth is secluded, yet it is still close to everything.

Philadelphia is less than one hour away via the Atlantic City Expressway or the Black Horse Pike. The Hamilton Mall and Consumer Square shopping centers are just 15 minutes away. The Jersey Shore beaches are less than a 30-minute drive.

Weymouth has mostly single-family homes. There are large riverfront homes along the river and secluded homes on multi-acre lots. There is a large community for residents aged 55 and older, the Oaks of Weymouth. There are also neighborhood homes in unincorporated places of the Township, Dorothy, and Belcoville.

The township’s school is in Dorothy, as well as small shops and restaurants. Belcoville is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlantic County.

Weymouth Township Facts

The Township is named for Weymouth in England. It was incorporated in 1798, from portions of Egg Harbor Township, followed by sections of the township that were used to create Hamilton Township, Corbin City, and Estell Manor.

When it was first incorporated, Weymouth Township was a large, sprawling area covering more than 150 square miles. Many Atlantic County towns would be formed from Weymouth and the township’s area became smaller and smaller throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

A train line built in 1863 connected Camden to the Jersey Shore.

The line ran regular passenger and freight service into the early 1980s. The line had a stop in Dorothy, and businesses and homes were built due to their proximity to the train station.

Belcoville was originally the “workers’ village” of the Bethlehem Loading Company. “Belco” is short for Bethlehem Loading Company. Their plant was built in Weymouth Township to supply forces during World War I, and more than 8,000 people lived here when it was in operation. The complex was large, more than 10,000 acres at its peak. Ruins of the plant still exist in the Atlantic County Park on Route 50. Today, these remaining homes in Belcoville are private residences. There are also retail stores and restaurants here.

With the end of World War I, most residents left the company-built homes in Belcoville. Vacant homes were dismantled, and many were moved to lots in Dorothy. The original plant area and adjacent property were sold to Atlantic County for use as a public park.

The bulkhead of the Great Egg Harbor River is a popular spot for locals and visitors to fish, picnic, or just relax. You can moor your boat on the bulkhead as well. Nearby is Gaskill Park, which is a popular location for weddings, and the Atlantic County Library. There is a marina just up the river from the bulkhead.

Weymouth seeks to balance development and the Township’s “rural charm.” Priorities include the Belcoville and Dorothy sections of the Township.

USDA’s Rural Housing Service offers loans and loan guarantees for single- and multi-family housing in rural areas. All of Weymouth Township’s residential properties are eligible for these loans. Qualification for these loans, loan guarantees, and grants is based on income. The USDA has both Direct Loans and Guaranteed Loan Programs.
