Northfield Facts

  • Northfield was incorporated in 1905, formed from sections of Egg Harbor Township. The area was settled by farmers and sea captains, who built homes along a Native American trail now known as Shore Road. Shore Road is one of the oldest prominent roads in continual use, and the first public road in Atlantic County, dating to 1716 from Port Republic to Somers Ferry at Somers Point.
  • Before it was Northfield, the area was known as Bakersville, named after Judge Daniel Baker, owner of one of the area’s largest shipyards. Shipbuilding was at its peak in the area from 1830 until 1880. These shipyards built schooners and used a ditch that went from Shore Road to a stream that enters the bay near the Dock Thoroughfare. There were also shipyards near Sculls Bay and Patcong Creek.
  • The picturesque Birch Grove Park is a 271-acre secluded area of natural land located at the former site of Somers Brick Works. The many ponds in the park are the result of excavation for clay to make bricks. There are several miles of trails through woodlands and lakeside habitats. The Park also has a museum and a historical house on site. Northfield also has another historic house, a circa 1790 cottage, known as the Risley Homestead, which is one of the only two homes in Atlantic County which has been nominated as an Historic Place.
  • A bicycle and walking path runs the length of Northfield, converted from a train line which once ran from Atlantic City and continued to Ocean City. The path connects to the Atlantic County Bikeway and has been named one of the Top 10 cycling trails in New Jersey.
  • The famed Atlantic City Country Club, with picturesque views of the Atlantic City skyline, is located on Shore Road in Northfield. The club is open to the public and has hosted six USGA major championships. Nucky Johnson, made famous by the HBO special Boardwalk Empire, was known to frequent Atlantic City Country Club, along with Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and many others.
